Album Review - Marisa and the Moths - 'What Doesn't Kill You'
Alt-rock rockers Marisa And The Moths are back – with their highly-anticipated second album, “What Doesn't Kill You”
Marisa and the Moths are back with their second and highly anticipated album – What Doesn’t Kill You. Since their debut, I have loved this band for their honesty and emotionally complex lyrics.
The album kicks off with the melodic ‘Cursed’ before exploding into the alt-rock ‘Get This Off My Chest’. These opening two tracks encapsulate the ride you are about to embark on. Two tracks on opposite sides of the sonic spectrum yet both perfectly Marisa and the Moths.
What Doesn’t Kill You alternates between hope and despair. The lyrics offer an intimate look into Marisa’s grief overcoming an abusive relationship and an honest insight into their battle with anxiety and depression.
There are times I felt I was listening to a heavier Jetty Bones. Both offer intimate insights into their personal lives and mental health. Marisa’s heavier sound is where this album shines. A weighted balance of breathy emotion and aggressive instrumentals. Vocalist Marisa’s flexibility and control to switch styles give the emotional weight of the lyrics an added oomph.
That oomph is at times hampered by the album’s length and interruptions of the interludes. Brilliant pieces of instrumental that work fine, but it does disrupt the roller-coaster ride they’ve set you on.
Overall, What Doesn’t Kill You, offers an emotional and intimate insight that’s also relatable. The album is an emotional roller-coaster, but it’s one hell of a ride that you wouldn’t mind riding twice.
