Rapper Amari Mar is back with their fourth album – Healers Of The Lost Art. The 15-track album explores the concepts of healing, life, and mental maturity.
Opening with The Healing Factor, the short interlude sets the tone. Amari is about to go on a journey and bring us along. The first official track – On a Mission is a brilliantly written track that gives you a glimpse into who Amari is, someone who wants to do good in a world that pushes you down, trying to fit you in a box. Mar is here with a mission; they let you know from the off.
Selective featuring, Frontier is one of the best tracks on the album. Mar shoots from the hip, baring his soul to the audience over stylish beats. Unsolved Mysteries changes pace as the instrumentals give off a ‘50s noir drama, working perfectly with the lyrics on display.
Mar paints himself as a traveling healer on The Forbidden Fruit, giving me a new perspective of the goal of this album. This isn’t an album just about identifying what is hurting us and how to heal, but who is there to help you heal.
There is one thing that hinders this album is some of the track ordering. An example is Love Language and How Could You. I feel Love Language works better when heard first, exploring Amari’s relationship with his partner and how they built this world together, only for it to come down in How Could You. The current way around How Could You feels bitter without that context. It’s a powerful track about noticing the signs of a toxic relationship and knowing when to walk away, even if you still love them.
Healers Of The Lost Art is a perfect title for this album, as Mar has created a work of art that exposes how we’ve lost our way in dealing with our mental health. As pointed out in the interlude -It’s Real, mental health is real and needs as much work as our physical health. I’m not a huge fan or listener to rap, but I love the journey he takes you on.
Amari Mar reveals how he isn’t perfect and people around him aren’t perfect. But you don’t need to be perfect to be a decent person. To heal from your past, not to use it as a crutch. Healers Of The Lost Art isn’t an album I would actively seek out, but I’m glad Amari sought me out. A surprising joy that spoke to me.
