Ellen May - A LonelyWay To Go - EP Review
Ellen May the Australian Emo/Pop-Punk band drop their Debut EP - 'A Lonely Way To Go.'
Perth, Australia’s very own Emo/Pop-Punk band – Ellen May has dropped their debut EP. ‘A Lonely Way To Go’ is a four-track collection centered on the theme – We all die alone.
The EP kicks off with one of its strongest tracks and lead single – How It Came To This.’ The band describes the song as that sense of wonder – ‘Wondering how a relationship can become a distant memory.’ A slow opening before the melodic drum kicks things into high gear. The instrumentals play into the theme, creating a daydream-like setting. The lyrics, however, steal the show, taking hold and not letting go.
The opposite is the case on ‘Misconstrued.’ A lyrically strong track that gets lost in its production. The thumping drums drown out the guitars, with at times sounding like one distracting beat. There is potential but the instrumentals are overworked. The penultimate track strips things back to an acoustic setting before they crescendo at the bridge. The instrumentals work harmoniously with the lyrics and vocals, filled with emotion and heart. Both of which they wear on their sleeves.
‘Back To The Start’ concludes the EP and it’s a fitting way to end. Finishing like they started with I believe their best track on the EP. This track perfectly encapsulates their self-described Emo/Pop-Punk sound from their bombastic punk sound to their emotive and thought-provoking lyrics. It's a perfect way to end.
‘A Lonely Way To Go’ is short but sweet with most of their tracks landing. The idea to theme the EP worked in the band’s favor and played to their strengths. There is potential and if they play to their strengths, I can see them going far. There is no better time to listen to Ellen May than right now.
‘A Lonely Way to Go’ drops Friday, March 1st, 2024, via We’re Trying Records.
